Sleep
Why babies wake at night
Night wakings in babies are incredibly common—between 28% and 57% of babies still wake regularly at 6 months and beyond. This is completely normal development, not a sign that something's wrong. Your newborn's sleep looks totally different from yours: babies spend lots of time in active sleep (the twitchy, noisy kind), which is actually important for their brain development. As they grow, they gradually shift toward deeper, quieter sleep. Things like illness, room temperature, and overstimulation can affect sleep patterns too. If your baby wakes frequently, especially if you're breastfeeding, that's often just how their body is designed. Understanding that night wakings are normal development—not a problem to fix—can help you feel less stressed about the nights ahead.
